White clover is an important and widely grown legume in Australia. White clover spreads and persists in a pasture by the growth, branching and rooting down of stolons. Consequently cultivars that have high stolon densities tend to be more persistent.

There is a strong genetic link between high stolon density, small leaf size and lower dry matter yield, however in recent years white clover breeders have made excellent progress in breaking the link. This has led to the development of breakthrough cultivars such as Grasslands Kopu II which is large leaved but retains a high stolon density, and therefore shows excellent persistence as well as class leading yield.
